Background of the Study

Drama and storytelling have long been recognized as effective tools for conveying messages and influencing behavior, particularly in settings where literacy levels may be low or where traditional communication methods are preferred. In Nasarawa State, where health education efforts often struggle to reach rural communities, the use of drama and storytelling offers a culturally appropriate and engaging approach to promoting hygiene practices. These forms of communication allow for the integration of local traditions, humor, and relatable scenarios that can make health messages more accessible and impactful. The study will evaluate how drama and storytelling can be leveraged to enhance hygiene practices and improve public health outcomes in Nasarawa State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite numerous public health campaigns aimed at improving hygiene practices in Nasarawa State, such as handwashing, sanitation, and waste disposal, significant challenges remain in terms of behavior change. One contributing factor to these challenges is the limited reach and engagement of traditional health messages, which may not resonate with the local population. Drama and storytelling offer an innovative method to address this gap, but their effectiveness in promoting hygiene behaviors in Nasarawa State has not been adequately assessed. This study will explore the potential of these communication tools in improving hygiene practices and will provide insights into their effectiveness in this specific context.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of drama and storytelling in promoting hygiene practices in Nasarawa State.
  2. To explore how culturally relevant drama and storytelling can influence community attitudes toward hygiene.
  3. To assess the impact of drama and storytelling on the adoption of improved sanitation practices in Nasarawa State.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is drama and storytelling in promoting hygiene practices in Nasarawa State?
  2. What cultural elements of drama and storytelling resonate most with the community in promoting hygiene behaviors?
  3. To what extent does the use of drama and storytelling lead to a change in hygiene practices within the community?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Drama and storytelling significantly improve hygiene practices in Nasarawa State.
  2. Culturally relevant drama and storytelling are more effective in promoting hygiene practices compared to traditional health messages.
  3. The use of drama and storytelling results in increased adoption of sanitation practices in Nasarawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on rural communities in Nasarawa State where drama and storytelling interventions have been implemented. Limitations may include challenges in measuring behavior change directly and potential biases in the responses of participants exposed to the interventions.
